Bemidji HS girls swimming sweeps Grand Rapids, Perham in double dual

The Bemidji High swim team upped its dual meet record to 2-1 Tuesday, sweeping a double dual from Grand Rapids and Perham.

Bemidji beat the Thunderhawks 229-86 and Perham 208-104.

Perham also beat the Rapids 181-128.

The meet was scored through six places on an 8-6-4-3-2-1 basis for individual events and 10-5-3 for relays.

Bemidji dominated the meet from the start.

Ashlin Hasson, Steph Frey, Jamie Vanasse and Katie Verchota won the medley with Bemidji also third and ninth.

Danielle Luby led the 200 free with Laura Yourd third and Claire Lawrence fourth.

Selina Gilbertson won the IM over Frey and Alicia Papke-Larson who took third.

Verchota took the 50 over teammate Maris Jahner with Kristen Sharpe third and Tayler Heinle fifth.

Jana Hedstrom, Brittanie Maxwell and Heinle were 1-2-3 off the one meter board.

Vanasse and Jahner went 1-3 in the fly. The 100 free found Verchota, Lawrence and Katie Krause 1-3-5 while Gilbertson doubled in the 500 where Lexie Hendricks took third and Yourd fifth.

Bemidji went 1-2-3 in the 200 free relay led by Gilbertson, Frey, Jahner and Heinle.

Bailey Meyers of Perham broke the Bemidji monopoly in the backstroke where Luby, Hasson and Taylor Hedges were 2-4-6.

But the home team returned to the victory stand in the breaststroke with Frey winning and Papke-Larson and Taylor McLean third and fifth.

It was a 1-2-5 finish in the closing 400 relay won by Gilbertson, Yourd, Papke-Larson and Lawrence.

Bemidji now faces eight straight road meets before Moorhead swims here Oct .27.
