Bemidji HS girls soccer: Detroit Lakes rally stops Jacks
Detroit Lakes rallied on two second half breakaways Thursday to overcome the Bemidji girls soccer team 3-2 at the Middle School field.
The win spoiled Seniors Day with the seven Bemidji seniors honored at halftime.
The loss dropped Bemidji to 8-8-1 preventing it from sealing a winning season and may have cost a second seed in the section tournament.
It also cost a second place finish in the Lakes to Prairie Conference. Bemidji and Crookston were tied for second at last report with 12 points. East Grand Forks has won the league and likely will be the top section seed.
Thursday's contest was a tale of two halves.
Bemidji dominated the first 40 minutes with a precision passing game that resulted in a 16-9 shots advantage.
Goals by Bronwyn Boyd, her ninth and Caitlin Blotske, her eighth, staked Bemidji to a 2-0 lead after 25 minutes.
It had ample chances to have scored 2-4 more goals but was unable to dent Courtney Gray, allowing the Lakers to stay within catching distance, a problem that has cost the team on several earlier occasions.
But the Lakers put only four shots on goal in the half before being staked to a late goal when Bemidji was called for a hand ball in the crease. DL received a free kick from 5 yards which Danielle Eidenshink converted.
Still Bemidji seemed likely to control play.
But the tide turned drastically after the break.
Bemidji's fine passing game disappeared entirely and DL came back with added aggressiveness to keep the ball in its offensive zone much of the time.
It out shot Bemidji 18-11 in the last 40 minutes though only four were on target.
But two of those were breakaways with senior Allie Aafedt converting both, one on a 20 yarder in the box and the second from 5 yards out at the left corner, converting Libby Jordan's lead pass.
Bemidji still had 10 minutes to gain the equalizer but never got a high percentage shot the rest of the way.
Nicole Ramos ended with six saves. Gray had 11.
