Bemidji HS girls soccer beats Walker, improves to 2-0
The Bemidji girls soccer team opened its home season in style Saturday, swamping WHA 8-1 at the Middle School field.
The eight goals were the most in several years for Bemidji, far exceeding last year's single game high of five, also against Walker.
It lifted Bemidji to 2-0 on the young season which hosts Moorhead Tuesday and travels to Detroit Lakes Thursday.
Bemidji warmed to the task slowly against the out matched Wolves, taking a 2-0 first half lead. But it banged home six more in the second half to pull steadily away.
The winners out shot WHA 48-1 with the lone Walker shot going in.
Bronwyn Boyd led the attack with a hat trick. Freshman Erin Booth added two while Paige Niskanen, Andrea Hanson and freshman Josie Spry scored once.
Bemidji was in control from the start but had its usual problems finding the goal.
It banged 17 shots on goal in the first half but scored only twice.
An early goal by Booth was waved off by the officials on an offsides call.
But Booth snapped the scoreless tie at 19:14 completing a 2 on 1 breakaway with Brianna Glynn getting the feed.
Two minutes later Niskanen celebrated her 16th birthday with her goal off a Caitlin Blotske feed.
Despite a steady rain of shots, the 2-0 lead lasted until halftime with Walker unable to get its first shot of any kind.
But the Warriors made the most of their first scoring chance early in the second half when Natalie Stein got loose behind the Bemidji defense to launch a 35 yarder from the right side that elude Nicole Ramos.
She was not to face another shot the rest of the game.
Boyd matched that shot with her first goal two minutes later and Spry's score off an Andrea Hanson feed upped the margin to 5-1 at the 10:21 mark.
Booth followed with her second goal and Boyd closed with a pair of long range bombs to close the scoring.
Jessica Gapinski finished with 40 stops in the contest. Ramos had none.
There was no B game with Walker lacking the numbers to field a younger team.
