Three games in as many nights took its toll on the Bemidji girls hockey team Thursday as it fell 3-2 to Andover in the title game of the Andover Invitational.

A night earlier, Bemidji eliminated Anoka 1-0 to gain the final.

"It was not one of our better games," said Coach Matt Menne., "But after two off periods, we came back strong in the third to cut the lead from three goals to one and could easily have won with a little bit of ;luck."

"But we learned from the experience and hopefully will come back strong next year,."

Bemidji opens a three game home stand Jan. 9 hosting St. Cloud.

Bemidji held an 8-7 shots edge in the opening period but fell behind 1-0 on a Paige Dale goal early in the stanza.

The Huskies took command in the second period, scoring a power play goal at 3:02 and short handed goal at 5:21.

That seemed to take the starch out of Bemidji and the team struggled the rest of the period outshot 10-8.

But after a "fireside chat" between periods, it came back firing to start the final 17 minutes and quickly got back into contention.

Becca Gregg converted on a power play at 2:35, her sixth goal of the season. Alli Heifort followed at 3:37 with her fourth from an Emily Larson feed and Bemidji seemed to be on the way to a comeback win.

But despite four more power play opportunities, the tying goal would not materialize.

Maria Thompson ended with 17 stops. Madison Denny made 25 saves for the Huskies.

The loss dropped Bemidji to 12-3 entering the second half of the season, well above what had been expected before the year opened.
