Rick Kehoe and his girls basketball players can enjoy the rest of the weekend after the Bemidji girls basketball team snapped its four-game losing streak to begin the winter by stopping St. Cloud Apollo 62-41 Saturday at the BHS gym.

"This win certainly makes the weekend much better," Kehoe said. "And the best part is we've been getting better in every game."

During the season opener two weeks ago against Sauk Rapids the Lumberjacks committed 42 turnovers. Saturday they only had 21.

"We're making better decisions," the coach said. "When we attack offensively and when we attack with the press we are an effective team. Our turnovers (Saturday) came when we weren't attacking."

BHS forged a 24-16 advantage at intermission and Greta Steever led the charge with 10 points. Steever finished with 23 and Jess Yost contributed 22.

"Many of those points were the result of our guards penetrating and dishing the basketball," Kehoe said.

Among those guards was Cheyenne Woods who also contributed four points in her first varsity start.

With 6:11 to play the Jacks had stretched their ccushion to 43-28 but with 2:37 remaining Apollo had whittled its deficit to single digits at 47-38.

Bemidji's guards, however, took control during the rest of the game.

Woods sparked a decisive late charge with a fast-break bucket and Yost preserved the win with nine points in the final two minutes, the majority courtesy of perfect feeds from the guards which resulted either in lay-ups or free throws.

"I'm happy for the kids," Kehoe said. "They deserve this win. They have been working hard all year and have been giving me their best efforts. I've always believed that a successful season isn't dictated by wins and losses. If you are playing your best basketball at the end of the year, you have had a successful season.

"Right now we are playing much better than we did at the start of the season," the coach continued. "And I'm sure we will be playing our best basketball at the end."

The Lumberjacks, 1-4, are at Moorhead Tuesday and then head to Albert Lea Dec. 27-28 for a holiday tournament.
