The girls head to Cloquet Tuesday night, host Duluth East Thursday and close a busy week Saturday at Sartell.

Willmar came into Saturday's contest as the No. 4 team in 3A. Bemidji was No. 6.

The game was played in a tournament atmosphere with neither team ever able to take control.

With just four minutes to play. Bemidji took its final lead on back to back treys by Erika Weimann and Kayla Hirt and salted the game away with four free throws in the last minute to widen a two point lead.

Hirt, who opened fast with 12 points in the first eight minutes, was blanked from the floor for the next 16, managing only two free throws in that stretch.

But she came on to close with 24 to pace the winners. Weimann had 12 and Jess Yost and Kenzie Kane came off the bench to each add 11.

Kayli Gimse hit 23 for the Cardinals and Jena Thompson had 12.

But Hirt checked 6-4 Alex Lippert with only four which played a major role in the win.

Bemidji took a 7-4 lead early before Willmar scored the next eight to move ahead by five.

Bemidji answered with eight, six by Kane and Yost, to reclaim the lead 15-12 but was trailing 20-19 when it ran another string of five go back ahead again.

The lead then changed hands eight times and was tied on a ninth before Bemidji moved in front on two Kane field goals and another by Weimann to take a 40-38 lead to the locker room.

Hirt had 14 at this point and Gimse 12.

Buckets by Weimann and Abby Hendricks opened the second half but Willmar quickly regained the lead but was never able to widen it past four points.

That came at 56-52 with eight minutes to play.

A three pointer by Weimann sliced that margin to one and another by Hirt sent Bemidji to a 60-59 advantage.

The later back to back treys by the same pair lifted Bemidji ahead 66-61 with under three minutes remaining.

Gimse answered with a trey to narrow the margin to a single field goal.

But the Cardinals were forded to foul to gain possession and hampered when they had only three personals to that point.

It took four whistles to get Bemidji to the foul line where Weimann hit two and Yost closed with another pair as Bemidji held the home team scoreless.

Bemidji held a strong 49-34 lead off the boards and had 12 turnovers to the losers 10.

The B and C teams also won.

The B Team reached 4-5 with a 46-41 decision with Kane and Caitlin Hadrava each hitting 10. No Willmar player reached double figures.

The freshmen won 35-34 to go 5-3 on the year.

Jessa Lusby and Greta Steever each hit 11 for the winners.
