Tuesday's mix of snow, cold and wind forced the postponement of the girls basketball and boys hockey openers but one of those games will be made up today when the hockey team heads to East Grand Forks for a 6:30 p.m. contest.

The girls basketball team will begin its campaign 7:30 p.m. today when it hosts Sauk Rapids and Tuesday's postponement has been rescheduled for Jan. 18.

"It would have been nice to get the season started Tuesday but the weather dictated otherwise," girls basketball coach Rick Kehoe said. "The postponement gave us a couple extra days to work on things and with so many new kids there was plenty to absorb in a short amount of time."

Tonight's projected starting cast will include senior guards Sommer Monsrud and Maren Erpelding, junior forward Jenna Sagedahl and sophomore forwards Greta Steever and Jess Yost.

Among the girls expected to see playing time off the bench are Cheyenne Woods, Cori Treat, Kellie Morehouse and Dani Gronhovd.

Woods, however, has an ankle problem and would not have been in Tuesday's lineup. Kehoe is hoping that the extra two days of rest will enable Woods to play today.

"We made good use of the extra practice days but we need to play a game," the coach said. "You can talk about things that will happen on the court and try to replicate those things in practice but that is impossible to do because you can't reach that level of competition."

The Lumberjacks enter tonight's game with untested athletes and Kehoe isn't sure what to expect.

"I don't know what we'll see," the coach said. "If we come out strong and beat Sauk Rapids by 20 points I wouldn't be surprised. But if we lost the game it wouldn't surprise me either.

"There are so many variables and so many unknowns with this team," Kehoe said. "We'll just see what happens."

The boys hockey team wasted no time rescheduling Tuesday's postponement as the Lumberjacks will travel to East Grand Forks for the season opener. The time of the game has also been moved ahead an hour to 6:30 p.m.

The game marks the start of an extended road trip that includes stops at Monticello (Friday), Sartell, Moorhead, Apollo and Warroad.

The Lumberjacks will make their home debut Dec. 16 at the BREC against Thief River Falls.
