Bad habits are tough to break and the Bemidji girls basketball team is fighting the habit of stumbling in the first half and trailing by double-digit figures at intermission.

In the second stanza the Lumberjacks have a tendency to battle back but the holes have been too deep for the Lumberjacks to fully recover.

Tuesday's home game followed that familiar script as BHS allowed Moorhead to forge a 37-19 lead at the break and the Spuds held on for a 78-65 win.

Moorhead broke away from the Jacks by draining seven 3-point shots in the opening 18 minutes but most of them were uncontested. Kelli Tonn drilled three of the bombs on consecutive possessions and those nine points gave the visitors an 11-8 advantage.

After Bemidji retook the lead at 14-13 with a pair of Jenna Sagedahl buckets Moorhead went on a 14-1 run to take control.

"The defensive effort wasn't there," said Bemidji coach Rick Kehoe. "In the first half I saw our heads drop when Moorhead went on its run.

"Moorhead shot well in that half and we really didn't give up too many layups or second-chance buckets but we really didn't give our best defensive effort."

In the second stanza the Spuds maintained a comfortable lead until the final few minutes. With 3:40 to play the Spuds enjoyed a 67-47 cushion but they became lax on defense and two minutes later the Lumberjacks were within nine points at 72-63.

Summer Monsrud keyed the rally with a trio of 3-pointers and Greta Steever contributed six points during the run.

"I looked up with a couple minutes left and all of a sudden we were only down nine points and we had the ball," Kehoe said.

But with time running out BHS was forced to foul and Moorhead canned six consecutive free throws. For the game the Spuds converted 13 of 15.

Bemidji hit only 10 of 23.

"We did a nice job of controlling our fouls," Kehoe said. "But, if we make our free throws we're in the game at the end."

Monsrud finished with 16 points and Steever 13. Caitlin Hadrava added 11 and Jess Yost 10.

Bemidji, 4-13, heads to East Grand Forks Friday.
