Pairings for the 7-4A football playoffs were announced today with Bemidji heading to Public Schools Stadium at Duluth to battle the East Grey hounds.


The Jacks drew the No. 5 seed following their loss to Rocori Thursday while East retained the No. 4 seed despite its final loss to Detroit Lakes Wednesday 21-20.

Cloquet (7-1) will be top seeded and opens against Duluth Central (0-7).

It may be the final game in Central's century old grid program with the school scheduled to close after this year.

Second seeded Denfeld (5-3) draws No. 7 Hibbing (3-5) as its first round opponent and will play at 5 p.m. at Public Schools Stadium. The East-Bemidji game will start at 8.

The final quarterfinal pits sixth rated Grand Rapids (3-5) at third seeded Hermantown (6-2).

The semifinals are scheduled for Saturday at the high seeds with times yet to be determined.

The Bemidji-East winner would take on the Cloquet- Central winner.

The final is Nov. 6 at the high seed at 7 p.m.

Bemidji and East have met no common foes this year.

East's wins have come over Grand Rapids 14-8, Central 20-16, Denfeld 49-22 and Crookston 28-0.

Its other setbacks were to Kingston, Mich. .21-7 and Hopkins 47-28.

Cloquet's lone loss came to Ashland, Wis. 42-7, a team that Hermantown beat 20-13 two weeks later. But Cloquet beat Hermantown 21-17 in their head to head meeting.

Denfeld lost to Delano, St. Thomas Academy and East.

Bemidji will be seeking its first section title since 2001.

8-2A playoffs

In Section 8-2A, top seeded DGF will host No. 6 WHA, No. 4 North Central hosts No. 5 Wadena, No. 3 Frazee entertains No. 6 Pelican Rapids and No. 7 Bagley is at No. 2 Hawley with the semifinals Saturday and the final at the Fargodome Nov. 6.

In 8A, No. 8 Cass Lake -Bena opens at top seeded Fosston, No. 5 Red Lake County travels to No. 4 LOW at Baudette, No. 6 Fertile plays at No. 3 Warren and No. 7 BGMR debuts at No. 3 Mahnomen.

8-3A pairings

In 8-3A, No. 8 Roseau heads to top seeded Pequot Lakes while fifth ranked Crookston invades No. 4 Thief River Falls.

In the lower bracket, No. 6 East Grand Forks heads to No. 3 Staples-Motley and No. 7 Park Rapids plays at No. 2 Perham.

Those semifinals are Saturday with the title game at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks Nov. 6 at 8 p.m.

In the nine man ranks, Section 8 openers send No. 8 Win-E-Mac to top seeded KCC a Hallock and No. 5 Kelliher-Northome to No. 4 Clearbrook-Gonvick. No. 6 Sacred Heart opens at No. 3 Goodridge-Grygla and No. 7 Northern Freeze at No. 2 Stephen/Argyle.

Their semis are Saturday and the title game at the Alerus Center Nov. 6 at 3 p. m.
