Bemidji HS football: Back injury sidelines receiver Rude
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

Senior wide receiver Ryan Rude will miss at least the first two months of the football season because of a fractured vertebra in his back.

"I wasn't hoping for this," Rude said after receiving word of the diagnosis Thursday.

Rude has been bothered by a sore back for about a month and limited his activity in the hope that the pain would subside.

"I was hoping it would heal on its own so I could play football," Rude said.

When the pain did not go away, however, Rude consulted with an orthopedic surgeon from Duluth.

"I saw Dr. Orton last week and we had a bone scan taken Tuesday," Rude said. "Dr. Orton got the report this week and he diagnosed a fracture in the L-5 vertebra of the lower back."

Dr. Orton recommended wearing a back brace for two to three months and then re-examining the injury.

Rude believes that triple jumping and long jumping during this spring's track and field season and playing basketball during the summer probably contributed to the injury.

"I also think it's partly heredity," he said.

"It's kind of a bummer," Rude added, "but I guess everything happens for a reason. I should be 100 percent for the basketball season but I'm hoping to be ready by the end of the football season. We'll just have to wait and see."
