Bemidji HS boys track team honored on awards night

The Bemidji High boys track team was honored Thursday afternoon at its annual Awards Day at Diamond Point Park.

Featured guests were the 28 letter winners of this years 46-member team that finished in the top five of 10 of its 12 meets wining titles at the Little Amik-II, Detroit Lakes and Hibbing Invitationals.

The afternoon event drew only the coaches and athletes to the picnic.

Coach Ryan Aylesworth conducted the program calling the season "a great year with a team I was intensely proud to coach."

He stressed to the underclassmen the great necessity of summer and off season training urging all to take part in fall and winter sports and spend time in the weight room for added strength.

Summer track will be held Tuesdays from 6-7:30 at the track through July with cross country drills Thursday evenings.

Cost of the track program is $25 which includes participation in a mid-July meet at Detroit Lakes.

He urged all his members to set goals for next spring and work to achieve them. He reminded them that the large senior class will be hard to replace and the younger members must be ready to step up to fill big shoes.

He also urged them to recruit their friends to join next spring's team where additional numbers will be needed.

Assistants Adam Wilson and Justin Smith thanked their specialists for their hard work and dedication and also urged off season conditioning.

Most Improved Runner-John Buckanaga

Lumberjack Spirit Award-Eric Johannsen

Most Valuable- Joe Kingery.

Named Captains for 2010 were Grant Mitchell and Matt Lee with a third to be added in the fall after the completion of the summer drills.

JUNIORS: Jordan Dahl, Peter Humeniuk, Dan Kilday, Matt Lee, Wes Mason, Grant Mitchell and Dylan Jones

SOPHOMORES: Andy Berube, Brian Bichel, John Buckanaga, Eric Johannsen, Kevin Nelson and Alex Schoneberger

FRESHMAN: Eric Hernesman

With the baseball and softball Awards Days held yesterday, only the tennis banquet has yet to be announced.
