Bemidji HS boys swim team pulls out win at Thief River Falls
The Bemidji Lumberjacks swim team went 1-2 in the closing relay to pull out an 88-82 victory at Thief River Falls Tuesday.
It was their first dual meet of the year. They are idle now until swimming at the Brainerd Invitational Dec. 29.
The Prowlers led 80-76 entering the 400 free relay won by Dylan Hoven, Adam Falk, Nick Nyberg and Pat Voss in 3:47.39 with Nick Gubbels, Tyler Hemp, Paul Voss and Matt Wilcox second in 3:51.79, ending 13 seconds ahead of the first Prowler unit.
Until then it was anyone's meet.
Falk, Wilcox, Paul Voss and Hoven gave Bemidji an early lead taking the medley relay.
Paul Voss and Nyberg then went 1-2 in the 200 free to widen the gap to 19-11.
Wilcox broke the TRF pool record with a 1:58.48 in the IM. But the Prowlers went 2-3-4 to gain two points.
Hoven then smashed the pool record with a 22.6 in the 50 free with Gubbels where the Jacks regained the two points.
It was Wilcox turn to add to the record smashing night, winning the fly in 55.05 to claim the pool mark with Falk third for a 9-7 Bemidji event.
Hoven then won the 100 free with Gubbels again taking third.
Paul Voss and Nyberg followed with a 1-3 in the 500 as Bemidji widened the gap to 62-48.
The Prowlers began their comeback with a 1-2 in the 200 free relay.
Falk won the backstroke but Thief River went 2-3-4 to draw within two at 71-69 and went ahead by four with a 1-2 in the breaststroke.
But Bemidji's surge in the 400 free relay told the story and gave th4 Jacks their win.
Bemidji lost additional points when the Prowler pool is not cleared for diving, negating that event.
Saturday Bemidji took third at the opening Apollo Relays won by Sartell with 140 points to 108 for St. Cloud Tech.
Bemidji had 48 to beat Moorhead by two points with Princeton and Apollo trailing.
Bemidji won the 600 and 850 free relays and took third in the 200 and 400 free but were blanked in four other events and disqualified in a fifth.
They were missing both Wilcox and Hoven, however, that day. They were competing in the National Junior Swim Meet in Indiana as members of Team Minnesota.
