Bemidji HS boys soccer season ends in section semifinals
The fine boys soccer season came to an end one round short of where it might have Tuesday when it bowed at St. Cloud Cathedral 3-0.
That game matched the top two remaining seeds in the section in the semifinals.
Third ranked Sartell stopped fifth rated Crookston 3-0 in the second semi and will challenge Cathedral tomorrow at 5:39 at St. Cloud State for the championship.
For the Crusaders, it will be the fourth straight state tournament trip should it win.
Cathedral star Mike Coborn was the difference, scoring all three goals in the first half, the third on a free kick.
The Crusaders held a 14-1 shots bulge in the 40 minutes and Bemidji never recovered.
It made adjustments at the break and came back to play the winners even down the stretch, out shot only 4-3. But it was never able to dent Peter Coborn, Mike's brother, who tended goal.
Bemidji was hampered on defense when Tanner Koetter was sick and unable to make the trip and Mike Rees, the defensive captain, was injured and sat out much of the first half. All three goals came during his absence.
Cathedral will take a 16-0-3 record to the title game. Bemidji closed its second finest season at 12-5-2. Only the 2007 team went further, reaching the section final before bowing to Apollo 2-1. That team won 13 games, still the school single season record.
"I told the players they had absolutely nothing to be ashamed of," said a disappointed coach Rick Toward. "They accomplished far more than we expected at the start of the year and reached goals that were never expected. We hope to build on that and challenge again next year."
Bemidji could be among the favorites in the Lakes to Prairie Conference where champion Detroit Lakes will lose heavily to graduation.
Kevin Larson ended with 15 stops in his final game. Coborn had with just four.
Cathedral joined Moorhead as only the second team to blank Bemidji this year. They were the third team to score three times on Bemidji this year. Only three more scored more than that total.
Graduation will claim scoring leader Rylee Curb. Larson, Matt Lee, Mike Burns, Rees, and Mike Smith.
