Bemidji HS boys hockey: Thief River Falls holds off Jacks rally for 3-2 win
Thief River Falls scored two power play goals in the opening period Thursday and used them to hand Bemidji a 3-2 loss at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
A third period tally widened the lead to 3-1, just enough to withstand a late Bemidji comeback that sliced the margin to one goal.
It lifted the Prowlers to 5-1 on the year and dropped Bemidji to 3-3.
The two teams play the return meeting at Bemidji Feb. 18.
Bemidji took a 1-0 lead at the start on a Max Hazelton goal.
But the Prowlers tied it at 5:32 on one power play and went ahead at 13:06 on another.
In all, there were 14 penalties whistled during the night, four of them coincidentals. Bemidji had eight of the 14.
After a scoreless second period which found the Prowlers holding a slim 5-4 shots edge, Brady Skime scored at 3:23 of the final stanza with what proved to be the game winner.
Will Bruestle matched this one in the final five minutes but the Jacks were unable to score again. The final penalty negating a manpower advantage when Miah Graves was pulled for an extra skater.
Graves ended with 17 stops. Zane Gothberg had 18 for the winners.
Bemidji returns to action tomrrow at Fergus Falls in a 2 p.m. matinee.
The Jacks B Team remained unbeaten in six starts, winning 4-0 on a 44-12 shots advantage.
Ben Schram was in goal making 12 saves.
Tyler Follis, Dillon Eichstadt, Chris Isensee and Matt Serratore had the B Team goals.
