Bemidji HS boys hockey team routs St. Cloud Apollo
The Bemidji High boys hockey team rebounded from its one loss to Moorhead Thursday to bury outmatched Apollo 7-0 Saturday in frigid Nymore Gardens.
It was the third win for Bemidji in four starts. It hosts Warroad Tuesday before heading to Thief River Falls and Fergus Falls for Thursday and Saturday games.
Apollo dropped to 1-4 out scored 20-1 in its last three starts.
Bemidji took shooting practice all night pouring 66 shots on goalie Charlie Rentz whose fine goal tending probably saved a dozen other scores.
Axel Osborne made his season debut for Bemidji in goal, turning back all 13 shots he faced.
Jesse Nemgar led the barrage scoring the first goal and adding five assists for a six point evening.
Kevin Larson scored twice and Lucas Phillips, Mike Rees, Rylee Curb and Matt Hietala once
Coach Wade Chiodo used the mismatch to shake up his four lines matching veterans with younger performers.
It presented him with chances to evaluate different combinations that could be used in future games.
Bemidji outshot the Eagles 25-4 in the opening stanza with Nemgar and Phillips scoring.
It outshot Apollo 25-4 in the second period when Rees, Curb, Hietala and Larson connected, Larson on the power play.
He repeated that feat for the only goal of the last stanza which was played on running time. Nemgar added his fifth assist and Steve Heller his second on that goal.
Phillips also had two feeds for a three point night.
Rentz ended with 59 stops, reminiscent of the days when tiny Indus fielded a hockey team with its goalies averaging 60-80 stops per contest.
Two of the Bemidji scores came on four power play attempts. Bemidji successfully killed off its three penalties.
The JV remained unbeaten in four starts with another blowout, winning 11-1. That followed the earlier 15-0 romp past Monticello.
Matt Serratore had a hat trick and James Bofferding and Jordan Heller scored twice.
Ben Schram had 11 stops. Rees Gregory kicked back 33 for the Eagles.
The Jacks are 4-0 this winter.
