Bemidji HS boys hockey: Scoring burst propels Jacks over Duluth Marshall
The Bemidji Lumberjacks boys hockey team turned in one of its top games of the season Friday, stopping Duluth Marshall 6-3 at Nymore Gardens.
While Bemidji outshot the Hilltoppers only 27-23, the game was not nearly that close as Bemidji scored five unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead into the final four minutes before yielding two meaningless goals.
Sophomore Jordan Heller led the way with a pair of goals while Jesse Nemgar, Steve Heller, Lucas Phillips and Isaac Bitter each scored once.
Bemidji held a firm lead in territorial advantage, keeping the puck in the offensive zone for long periods of time.
Nemgar gave them an early lead at 2:37 on a power play, one of two Bemidji would score during the game.
Marshall evened the count nine minutes later on the first of Dave Morin's two tallies.
But Steve Heller got this one back at 16:17 at the end of a breakaway, firing from the deep right side to beat Brian Anderson.
Each side had nine shots in the stanza which was perhaps. Marshall's best period.
Two picture goals early in the second period gave Bemidji a three goal lead.
Both came at the end of 2 on 1 rushes with Jordan Heller completing the first rush on feeds from Nemgar and John Forseth and Phillips duplicating the goal two minutes later off a Rylee Curb feed.
Bemidji held a slim 9-8 shots edge in that stanza.
The Jacks put the game away late in the final period as Bitter came out of a melee of bodies in front of the net to score at 12:27 and Jordan Heller converted a Nemgar feed less than a minute later for the 6-1 lead.
It took Marshall only six seconds to get that one back with Morin connecting again.
Mac Dow scored on a power play in the last three seconds for the final goal.
Miah Graves ended with 20 stops. Anderson had 21.
Bemidji drew five of the nine penalties with the Jacks converting two of their four chances and Marshall one of five.
Bemidji raised its record to 10-6 with the win.
The B Team reached 15-1 with a 3-0 shutout win, controlling play throughout but netting only three of 44 shots on goal.
It was the seventh shutout this year for Nate Weossner's forces.
Ben Schram had 13 stops. Tony Dow kicked aside 41.
Will Bruestle, Ryan Erickson and Garrett Lind had the three goals with Bruestle adding two assists.
