The Bemidji high boy's hockey team hung with No. 12 Alexandria Saturday night, but lost 5-1 at Nymore Arena in a game that was closer than the score would indicate.
Outshooting the Cardinals 34-31 Alexandria capitalized on a few problematic pucks.
Up 2-1 after two, Alexandria's Ross Thompson scored his first of two goals five minutes in. Then eight minutes later a puck was thrown out of the Cardinals zone. Thompson chased it through center-ice and into the Bemidji zone.
Lumberjacks goaltender Miah Graves darted out after the puck and got to it between the circles, but his clearing attempt hit Thompson and he scored on the open net from the near face-off dot.
Two minutes later, after coach Wade Chiodo had pulled Graves for an extra attacker, Alexandria's Casey Vangsness cleared the puck out of the zone. It was headed towards the far corner, but rolling on its side it turned towards the net and the Cardinal's led by four.
Bemidji threw a lot of pucks on net, but goalie Erich Murphy limited their rebound chances.
Sophomore defensemen Tyler Tatro tied the game in the second, but Alex scored the game-winner only a minute later.
Bemidji, outscored 11-1 in their last two games, should have a chance to regroup Saturday. After back-to-back games against ranked teams they face River Lakes, 2-7 in their last nine games and 6-11-1 overall.
