Carey Woods had the game of his life Tuesday at Grand Forks Central as the junior hit from everywhere on the court to lead the Lumberjacks to a 93-65 victory.

Woods finished with a career-best 52 points and that total is thought to be a Bemidji High School record.

The junior was removed from the action in the fourth quarter but when BHS coach Jeff Brown was informed that Woods was a few points shy of the record, which is thought to be owned by Jim Jensen, Brown reinserted his shooting guard onto the floor.

"I had no clue that I was anywhere near a record until they put me back in with a minute to go and told me to score four points," Woods said.

"It was very exciting for me but I was very nervous at the end because the final two points were free throws after a flagrant foul and I was all alone at the free throw line."

Woods overcame his nerves, converted both of his charity tosses and had the record.

"Carey was unbelievable," Brown said. "He had six 3-pointers in the first half and in the second half he continued to drive to the basket.

"I took him out and planned to sit him the rest of the way but when a parent told me that the school record was 50 points I put Carey back in."

"Coach gave me some freedom on the court so I went with it," Woods said.

Tuesday's win was Bemidji's 16th in 18 outings. The Lumberjacks return to duty Thursday when they host Duluth East and Saturday they invade Alexandria.

"We played hard and did a nice job of dictating the tempo and that always is one of our goals," the coach said. "It was a good game. Everybody played well.

The Jacks won Tuesday's freshman game 90-34 but lost the junior varsity contest 65-58.
