Bemidji HS baseball wins opener, loses second game against Alexandria
The Bemidji baseball team split a home doubleheader with Alexandria Friday, winning the opener 3-2 but dropping the nightcap 6-0.
Today finds the Lumberjacks, 7-4, heading to Grand Forks Central for a doubleheader. The games were originally scheduled for Thursday but were postponed until today because of rain.
Ryan Stevens earned the pitching victory in Friday's opener as he spaced six hits. Stevens fanned five and walked three.
Alexandria opened the scoring with a pair in the second on a single, double, RBI groundout and three walks.
Bemidji began its comeback in the lower second when Cody Rutledge walked, gained second on a ground ball and third on a balk. Mason Bellew earned the RBI with a ground ball.
The Jacks drew even in the fourth when Tyler Follis singled and gained third courtesy of Matt Hietala's single. The runners then worked a double steal and Follis scored.
Bemidji plated the winning run in the sixth as Collin Leif and Follis singled and Rutledge drove in pinch-runner Cole Bardwell with a sacrifice fly.
The rematch belonged exclusively to the Cardinals as they ripped eight hits while limiting Bemidji's attack to one hit, a single by Follis in the opening stanza.
Alexandria scored the only run it would need in the third on a hit batter, stolen base, ground ball and single.
The Cardinals tallied a pair in the fourth with the key blow being a 2-run double by Russ Thompson.
A Bemidji error opened the door to a pair of Alexandria runs in the fifth and the visitors capped their scoring with a solo tally in the sixth.
Zach Solheim took the mound loss, giving up five runs in as many innings. Chad Head worked the final two frames.
