Bemidji HS baseball, tennis teams lose on the road
Grand Rapids rallied with four runs in the final three innings to down the Bemidji baseball team 4-1 Tuesday in Grand Rapids.
The loss dropped the Lumberjacks to 1-2 on the season. Bemidji will try to improve on that record Saturday when it plays at Sartell at noon and at Sauk Rapids at 2:30 p.m.
"We had only four hits and, obviously, that's not going to be enough to win many games," said BHS coach Mike Fogelson. "But we hit the ball very well at times. The difference was Grand Rapids' defense."
The Thunderhawks turned three infield double plays which ended Bemidji threats before they could materialize into big innings.
The Jacks did score a run in the first inning when Mitch Hendricks was hit by a pitch, Jeremiah Graves bunted him to second and Tyler Follis delivered an RBI single.
But Bemidji would not find the scoreboard again while Grand Rapids scored single runs in the fourth and fifth and added a pair of insurance tallies in the sixth.
Cody Rutledge started on the Bemidji mound and worked into the fifth. He allowed two runs on three hits while walking three and striking out five.
Matt Schneider and Follis also saw duty on the mound.
Crookston handed the Bemidji boys tennis team a 5-2 setback Tuesday in Crookston.
The Lumberjacks won at first singles and second doubles but the Pirates captured the remaining matches, all but one in straight sets.
Ben Holter downed Wade Johnston 6-1, 6-3 at first singles while Levi Rickert and Joey Wood teamed for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Josh Baldock and Alex Krudhomme at second doubles.
Other singles results saw Justin Byers fall 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 at second, Ben Kloha lose 6-4, 6-2 at third and Hayden Byers drop a 6-3, 6-3 decision at fourth.
In doubles action, Adam Holter and Kyle Fodness fell 6-2, 6-4 at first and the team of Alex Hess and Kyle Edens lost 6-1, 6-4 at third.
"It was very breezy and Crookston handled the situation better than we did," said BHS coach Scott Engelstad. "Hopefully, we learned a few things."
The Lumberjacks are off until hosting a triangular with Grand Rapids and Park Rapids on Thursday.
BHS will battle Grand Rapids at 2 p.m. and tangle with Park Rapids at 5 p.m.
