Bemidji HS baseball team breaks out the wood bats for Sagedahl tournament
The Bemidji baseball team will host its annual Des Sagedahl Wooden Bat Tournament today and Saturday and joining the Jacks will be Fargo North, Grand Forks Red River and Duluth East.
BHS will take a 10-5 record into today's action after splitting a pair of 9-4 verdicts with Warroad on Tuesday.
"The tournament has a very strong field," Bemidji coach Mike Fogelson said. "Duluth East has beaten both Brainerd and Grand Rapids this year, Fargo North is always good and we've already seen Red River and we know they have a great team.
"These are three quality teams and playing teams of this caliber is what we need."
Fargo North and Duluth East will open the tournament at 5 p.m. today. Bemidji and Red River will follow.
Saturday's action begins with Fargo North tangling with Red River at 10 a.m. Bemidji and Duluth East are scheduled for noon while Red River will battle Duluth East at 2 p.m.
The tournament finale, scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, pits Bemidji against Fargo North.
"I'm hoping to see us play consistent baseball, pitch well, play solid defense and try to manufacture runs in each inning," Fogelson said. "With three games in two days we're going to get the roster involved but we also need to settle into a tournament lineup."
Ryan Stevens and Zach Solheim will pitch the first two games and either Josh Kane or Matt Schneider will start the third. Whoever doesn't start Saturday will get the call Monday at Detroit Lakes.
"Using wooden bats puts a greater influence on pitching and defense," Fogelson said. "Personally, I'd love to see us play with wooden bats all of the time. There is something traditional about the crack of the bat."
