CLOQUET -- The Bemidji softball team closed out its regular season in thrilling style.
The Lumberjacks scored a run in the top of the seventh inning and held on in the bottom half of the inning to defeat Cloquet 1-0 Saturday afternoon.
"We snuck one out there," BHS head coach Brad Takkunen said. "Cloquet is a very good team. We were glad to pull one out."
The Jacks (14-6) scored their lone run in the top of the seventh.
Junior Jess Yost tripled off Cloquet pitcher Chandler Beaupre. The cutoff was off target, allowing Yost to scurry home and score the game's lone run.
Yost, who started in the pitching circle, came back out in the seventh inning and retired the side to end the game.
Bemidji ended the game with seven hits but couldn't capitalize on any of them.
"We had seven hits, and hit the ball hard part, but we hit the ball right at them," Takkunen said. "They made some plays, though."
Yost tripled and doubled while Jineane Williams singled twice to lead Bemidji offensively.
Cloquet (9-9) managed only three hits in the game. Yost struck out 11 batters and walked two.
"You play against better competition, you have to adjust as a team," Takkunen said. "You have to manufacture some runs, and we did that today."
The Lumberjacks will play an opponent to be determined in the Section 8-AAA Tournament starting Wednesday. The tournament will be seeded today.
