Bemidji High School golf: Jacks girls open season at Monticello
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

The Bemidji High School girls golf team becomes the first spring unit to see the outdoors today when it travels to Monticello to begin its new season.

Coach Jeff Nelson expects a 16-team field to test the Monticello Country Club Course, one of the few that have opened this spring.

It will be the first day outside for Bemidji with no area courses set to open yet.

Nelson, who began the girls program in 1988, starts his 22nd season, the only coach the girls have ever had.

He will have to watch the early season from a golf cart after sustaining a broken leg late this winter in a curling accident. He will not leave his crutches for another three weeks.

Nelson is working with one of his smaller squads with only 15 players out. Three of the group were tournament starters last year.

Graduation claimed only Katie Reise and Lynn Arndt from the section roster, with Lisa Holtman the only other senior.

One other tournament performer failed to return for her senior year.

Leading the way this spring are senior Kelsey Bretschneider and sophomores Shelby Sauer and Emily Frosaker.

They will be joined today by junior Marissa Loch and sophomores Megan Phelps and Erin Buckanaga.

Junior Stiina Stocker also lettered last year.

Up from the junior varsity ranks come juniors Aimee Sundquist and Jade Hovet.

Rounding out the squad are juniors Rachel Bell and Abby Moudry, sophomores Ida Brook and Katie Sundquist and freshmen Rachel Caduff and Lauren Lund.

Nelson hopes to get at least four of the group shooting in the 80s by the end of the spring. Last year the team had only three rounds under 90 all season.

The team faces a 13-meet schedule, highlighted by the Bemidji Invitational at the Country Club April 24.

The section meet will be at Long Prairie this year May 25-26 with the state returning to Bunker Hills in Coon Rapiids.

The JV faces a six-meet year with Liz Neff back at the helm.
