The Bemidji High girls swim team was assured of scoring at the state meet for the first time in four years when diver Jana Hedstrom gained the top16 in Thursday's preliminaries.
The Bemidji sophomore hit 226 points in her preliminary eight dives to finish 15. The top 16 qualified to move into the second round Saturday.
Coach Ryan Ohnstad was well pleased with her showing which left her in good shape to move well up in the final standings with a good showing in her final dives.
"If she hits well, she could possibly rise as high as eighth," he said.
Opening their preliminaries today are Selina Gilbertson in the 200 freestyle, Stephanie Frey in the IM and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
The state finals will be tomorrow.
