BRAINERD - Saturday's scheduled 18-hole girls Brainerd Invitational at The Legacy Golf Course was reduced to nine holes because of terrible weather conditions and Bemidji finished fourth in the 20-team field.

In an attempt to beat the weather the officials adopted a shotgun start which meant that the golfers did not all play the same holes and a true medal score could not be used to determine the winners.

"So we used the shots over par to come up with a score," said BHS coach Jeff Nelson. "That's about all you can do."

Annie Heck of Visitation was the only girl who finished under par Saturday as the seventh-grader carded a 1-under-par round.

"She was so small that she didn't even get wet," Nelson said.

Bemidji's scoring was led by Katelin Craft who was +7. Kelsey Isaacson finished +8 and Morgan Miller and Morgan Williams each were +10. Megan Dondelinger shot +11 and Savanna Hanson +18.

Collectively the Jacks finished fourth at +35.

Pequot Lakes topped the field at +27 while Elk River was second at +32 and Owatonna third at +33.

"It was a matter of go out and get the round over with," Nelson said. "It rained the entire time and being on the course wasn't any fun. But our kids hung in there and would have made it through the entire 18 holes if asked.

"But we really didn't need to finish this round," Nelson continued. "And it was the right decision to quit after nine holes."
