Fires burn as protesters march on highway as Dakota Access Pipeline camp deadline arrives

Bemidji High School boys basketball team wins opener

Carey Woods hit 15 field goals and finished with 32 points to lead the Bemidji boys basketball team to a 77-55 season-opening victory Friday night at East Grand Forks.

Cody Rutledge added 10 points and Ryan Rude had nine. Another three players contributed seven points.

"It was a nice win," said Bemidji coach Jeff Brown. "When you can win by 20 points at East Grand Forks and have the balance that we did Friday, it is a great game."

The Green Wave enjoyed a size advantage but the Lumberjacks countered with an aggressive style of basketball and the balanced offensive attack.

"We had many guys step up," Brown said. "The kids played hard. We still have things to learn but this is a game that we can build upon."

The Jacks return to action Tuesday at Fargo South.

Bemidji's junior varsity was a 72-33 winner and the freshmen won 80-38.
