The Bemidji High boys hockey team exploded into the new season Tuesday night rolling past out matched East Grand Forks 10-1 before a small turnout at the John Glas Field House.
Bemidji warmed to the task slowly, overcoming a wild first eight minutes of play to take a 2-1 lead by the period' end.
It then exploded for six goals in the second period to put the game away and added two on running time in the third
Steve Heller, Brady Devescovi and Noah Nemgar each scored twice and Lucas Phillips, Max Hazelton, Rylee Curb and Tyler Follis once. Bemidji rained 47 shots on two East Side goalies while Miah Graves faced only 16 all night.
Only the first got past him with Jake Useldinger scoring at 4:08 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
But they were not to score again.
Bemidji was hurt by a flurry of turnovers at the start, perhaps keyed too high for the opening game.
But they quickly regained their composure and tied the game on Phillips' goal at 9:59 and went ahead for the night at 12:39 when Devescovi connected with his first tally.
Bemidji held a 10-7 shots lead in the session.
After fireside chat from Coach Wade Chiodo between periods, the Jacks came out firing, scoring twice in an eight second period of the opening minute to lead 4-1.
Heller and Hazelton scored those goals and Heller repeated at 2:22 for his second goal of the night.
Bemidji then took advantage of two power plays to move to a 7-1 lead with Curb and Nemgar registering for the first line.
Devescovi closed the stanza at 11:05 for the 8-1 lead at the second break.
The final period flew by rapidly but not too quickly for Follis and Nemgar to score in a three minute stretch late in the stanza to reach double figures.
Bemidji ended 2-5 on the power play and skated off both of its own penalties.
The losers switched goalies after the seventh goal with Shane Wasylow getting 18 stops and his replacement Beau Scheving adding 19 more.
The JV had an even easier time, burying East Side 5-0 behind a 61 shot barrage.
Matt Serratore scored twice and Chris Isensee, Bo Borowski and Will Bruestle once.
Ben Schram faced only three shots. Hunter Aubol kicked back 56 for the losers.
Both teams host Monticello Friday at Nymore Gardens with the varsity clash at 7:30.
