Superman was known as a quick-change artist as, whenever danger threatened, he would race to an alley to switch from his Clark Kent clothes to the Man of Steel cape and leotards.

Saturday afternoon at the Nymore Arena the Bemidji girls hockey players gave Superman a run for his money as they dismantled River Lakes 4-1 and promptly changed from hockey gear to formal wear as they prepared for the annual winter event.

"I don't know what to expect," BHS coach Matt Menne said before the game.

Apparently the girls are able to separate work from fun as they staged a relentless attack and dominated from the opening faceoff. The result was Bemidji's second home victory in less than 24 hours. Friday night the Jacks blanked North St. Paul 1-0.

"It was a solid effort," Menne said. "When we played 5-on-5 we moved the puck very well and controlled the tempo. We also peppered their goalie and when you do that you create opportunities with rebounds and give-and-gos."

BHS outshot the Stars 15-5 in the opening period but neither team could find the net. That changed 30 seconds into the second stanza, however, as Janie Johnson tallied her second goal of the season from just outside the left post.

Amanda Hunt scored from the left point midway through the period and five minutes into the third stanza Hunt duplicated the goal.

Chaniel Nelson capped the scoring when she finished a picture-perfect 2-on-1 break with Johnson. Nelson carried in from the left side, passed to Johnson in the slot and Johnson returned the pass, hitting Nelson's blade as her winger was nearing the crease.

"All of our goals came from the seniors and it was great to see them get the job done," Menne said. "The first line of Janie Johnson, Chaniel Nelson and Becca Gregg controlled the game when they were on the ice and set the tone with their play."

Bemidji improved to 2-5 and will return to action Thursday when it hosts Grand Rapids at the Community Arena.
