The Bemidji High School girls basketball team was unable to recover from its slow start in a 63-54 loss to Detroit Lakes Tuesday at the Bemidji High School Gym.
The Lakers rushed out of the gates to outscore the Lumberjacks 19-3 in the first eight minutes of play.
"You cannot start games down 19-3 and expect to win," Bemidji head coach Rick Kehoe said. "It didn't seem like they missed too many shots in the beginning."
Thanks in large part to Cheyenne Woods and Jess Yost, Bemidji was able to cut the deficit to ten points at 26-16 with 4:38 left in the first half.
Yost finished with a game-high 20 points.
A three-pointer from Dani Gronhovd in the final 30 seconds of the half brought the Lumberjacks within five.
Detroit Lakes led 32-27 at halftime.
Bemidji tied the game at 35 with 14:12 left to play after getting baskets from Jenna Sagedahl, Woods, Caitlin Hadrava, and Yost.
Woods finished with 12 points for the Lumberjacks.
"I told the girls that I am very proud of them," Kehoe said. "They don't give up."
The Lakers answered by going on a 13-0 run to build a 52-39 lead with 7:52 remaining.
A three-pointer from Cori Treat cut the Laker lead back down to five points with 4:32 left to play.
Bemidji was able to get as close as five points but were doomed by a pair of costly turnovers in the final two minutes.
"It is the mental mistakes that are getting us," Kehoe said. "We make good decisions for the most part and then we will go through a stretch with some mistakes."
The Lumberjacks honored its seniors before the game for senior night: Hadrava, Sagedahl, Treat, Ellie Muller, Natasha Lane, Megan Downey and Kellie Morehouse.
"They are a good group," Kehoe said of his seniors. "They work their butts off and they all know their roles on the team. I haven't had a problem with them at all and they will be missed next year."
Hadrava led the seniors in scoring with 11 points.
Three Cheerleading seniors were also recognized: Laura Lee Miller, Jordyn Olson and Jana Hedstrom.
The Lakers were led by Courtney Gray and Courtney Hedstrom who each scored 13 points.
Bemidji (11-13) will return to action Thursday at 7:30 at Grand Rapids.
