BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji tennis team avenged an earlier loss to Crookston with a 5-2 win against the Pirates Monday afternoon.
"We lost to them 5-2 earlier this season," Lumberjacks head coach Mark Fodness said. "To lose like that and come back and win tonight... I'm just very impressed with our mental toughness."
The Lumberjacks swept doubles play 3-0, and split the singles matches 2-2.
In a few instances, the Lumberjacks had to battle back from big deficits to win.
In No. 4 singles play, Noah Holter lost his first set to Bobby Tiedmann 3-6. He was down 40-0 in the second set but mounted a huge comeback to tie the set and win the tiebreaker 7-0. He eventually won the third set 6-1 to win the match.
The No. 2 doubles team of Austin Korczak and Zach Hewitt also dropped their first set, 4-6, but mounted a comeback to win 6-1, 6-4.
"There were so many moments when our guys could have quit," Fodness said. "But they didn't. That's the kind of thing we're going to need to see next week at sections."
The Jacks also got great play from their No. 1 singles player, Alec Hess, who defeated Ross Forney 6-4, 6-2.
"He's mentally tough," Fodness said of Hess. "He had lost to Forney in three sets when we played them before. But he did a nice job coming out and beating him this time."
Also victorious was the No. 1 doubles team of Kyle Fodness and Adam Holter and the No. 3 team of Garrett Atteberry and Gabe Heifort.
Matt Hokanson and Isak Somer, the No. 2 and 3 singles players, each played close matches but ultimately lost.
"This is the way to work," Fodness said of his team's mindset in the final week of the season. "If we keep getting better, we can get on a roll and have a chance against anybody at sections."
The Lumberjacks have another home meet this afternoon. They'll take on Moorhead and Thief River Falls in a triangular meet starting at 3 p.m.
Bemidji will then travel to Grand Rapids for its final dual meet of the regular season.
The section 8AA tournament begins next week, with team play slated for Tuesday, May 22, and the individual portion set for Thursday, May 24.
