Bemidji fire calls remain relatively steady during 2010

The Bemidji Fire Department responded to more than 2,600 calls for service in 2010, including 98 fire calls.

Fire Chief Dave Hoefer last week released the annual report, which indicated that service calls remained about level from 2009. In 2010, there were 2,656 service calls; in 2009, there were an even 2,600.

The department estimates having saved about $5.9 million worth of property in 2010.

The 2010 calls were broken down as follows:

E 1,447 service calls, including 1,385 calls for airport coverage. Other calls in this category include police assists and public assists.

E 791 calls for rescue and emergency services, including 668 medical calls. Other calls here include personal-injury accidents and rescues.

E 145 good intent calls, which includes calls on prescribed fires and smoke scares.

E 112 false alarms and false calls.

E 98 fires, including building, house, chimney car and grass fires.

E 5 special incidents.

E 1 overpressure, rapture or explosion call.

The Bemidji Fire Department serves three cities and 15 townships, covering 522 square miles with three fire stations.

By far, Bemidji has the most calls - at 2,442, including the 1,438 service calls (including the 1,385 for airport protection) and 733 rescues (medical calls).

Other municipalities had the following calls:

E Northern Township, 47 calls, including 11 rescues and 11 fires.

E Bemidji Township, 46 calls, including 17 rescues and 12 fires.

E Eckles Township, 23 calls, including five rescues and five fires

E Grant Valley Township, 18 calls, including eight fires and five rescues.

E Frohn Township, 12 calls, including one rescue and one fire.

E Turtle Lake Township, 11 calls, including three rescues and two fires.

E Helga Township, 10 calls, including three rescues and four fires.

E Turtle River Township, eight calls, including one rescue and one fire.

E Rockwood Township, six calls, including two rescues and one fire.

E Durrand Township, five calls, including two rescues and no fires.

E Fern Township, five calls, including no rescues and two fires.

E Port Hope Township, four calls, including one rescue and two fires.

E City of Wilton, one call for one rescue.

E Lake Hattie Township, one call for one fire.

E Liberty Township, one calls for one fire.

E Schoolcraft Township, one call for one rescue.

E City of Turtle River, no calls.

E 15 calls came from out of the service area, including five rescues and four fires.
