Bemidji finished 2-2 at Apple Valley Invitational
APPLE VALLEY – The Bemidji volleyball team split its four weekend matches at the Eagle Invitational and finishing 2-2 in this tournament is a great accomplishment.
On Friday the Lumberjacks lost to Blaine 2-0 but defeated Apple Valley 2-0. In Saturday’s consolation round BHS crushed Moorhead 25-20, 25-10 and fell 25-17, 25-22 to Waconia in the consolation championship.
“We did many good things Saturday,” said BHS coach Teresa Colligan whose team enters Thursday’s home match against Grand Rapids with a 9-3 record.
“Finishing 2-2 in a tournament like this is a very good showing. The two teams we lost to are ranked in the top eight in the state.”
Blaine is rated No. 2 in the Class 3A poll while Waconia entered the weekend ranked eighth.
Saturday against Moorhead the Jacks outlasted the Spuds in the opening game and hammered Moorhead in the second set.
“We stepped up our play,” Colligan said. “After Friday’s matches we discussed our strengths and weaknesses, just like we do after every match. We talked about what we needed to focus on and the girls responded.”
Alexa Greendahl dished 18 assists which helped lead to Jest Yost’s 11 kills and seven by Timi Severson.
Allie Heifort added two blocks while Yost had eight digs and Hanna Olson five.
In the loss to Waconia Yost blasted 12 kills and Severson eight. Greendahl contributed 18 assists while Jasmin Yerbich finished with eight digs and Yost six. Severson added two blocks.
“We did many good things over the weekend and playing in this tournament is going to make us better,” Colligan said.
