Bemidji Figure Skating Club: Annual competition scheduled Sunday
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

The Bemidji Figure Skating Club will host Funtastics Basic Skills Competition Sunday, Jan. 23 at the Neilson Reise Arena in Bemidji.

Forty skaters from Bemidji, Bagley, International Falls, Grand Rapids, Thief River Falls and Brainerd will perform a program of compulsory elements, based on their skating level, for a panel of judges in the annual competition. The public is invited to attend and admission is free. Events will begin at 10 a.m.

The purpose of the competition is to promote an introductory, competitive experience for beginning through newly advanced skaters.

"Funtastics is a great way for kids to get a taste of what a figure skating competition is all about in a fun and supportive environment," said Debbie Warne-Jacobsen, competition coordinator. "Skaters have an opportunity to show off the skills they've learned in their classes and in private lessons with friends and family cheering them on."

Many of the skaters competing are part of Bemidji Figure Skating Club's Basic Skills Learn to Skate program and will be competing for the first time. For some of the club's more advanced skaters, Funtastics marks the beginning of the competitive season as skaters will be participating in competitions throughout the state over the next several months.

Funtastics is sanctioned by United States Figure Skating, the national governing body for figure skating. Skaters must meet USFS qualifications to participate and every skater will receive an award for participation.
