BEMIDJI – It is not often that northern Minnesota and fashion have a connection. Northwoods residents are known as hunters, anglers and people of the outdoors.

However, with access to wildlife materials such as chicken, pheasant and turkey feathers, in terms of fashion, wild has a whole new meaning.

Kelly Schultz, Bemidji resident and fashion designer, was selected by MNFashion to showcase her fascinators (headpiece type of millinery) at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week Emerging Designer Showcase Sept. 24.

According to www.mnfashion.org, the show featured up-and-coming designers displaying their spring and summer 2013 looks. Six apparel and six accessory designers were paired up in three mini-runway shows at the Atrium at Grain Belt Bottling House in Minneapolis.

“I have been sewing since I was 8,” Schultz said. “Designing accessories and hats has come natural to me. I was inspired by the royal wedding in 2011 of Kate Middleton and Prince William. Since then, I have created hundreds of fascinators and other pieces. My aesthetic is a cross of European style meets the wild north woods.

“It is the greatest honor that I am going to be part of Fashion Week in Minnesota,” she said.

Schultz is the play-by-play announcer for the Bemidji State University women’s hockey games as well as the Beaver Radio Network marketing coordinator at RP Broadcasting.
