SARTELL – The rigors of consecutive late nights on the courts away from home caught up with the Bemidji girls tennis team Saturday as the Lumberjacks fell to St. Cloud Tech 7-0 in the Section 8-2A championship meet here.

BHS finished the team portion of its season with a 14-1 record, the lone loss coming in Saturday’s section final. The section individual championships will be Friday and Saturday in Sartell.

“After a tremendous performance against Monticello in Saturday’s semifinals we faced a very strong Tech team,” said Jacks coach Mark Fodness. “We knew we faced an uphill battle.

“After Friday’s quarterfinals we didn’t get off the courts and back to our hotel rooms until 12:30 a.m. And by the time we finished Saturday’s final against Tech it was 11:30 p.m., so that made for a very long day in a hostile environment,” Fodness added.

That killer schedule eventually took its toll on the Lumberjacks. BHS opened strong against Tech as it owned a lead in the four initial matches but couldn’t maintain that pace.

“There’s a reason Tech is ranked as one of the better teams in the state,” Fodness said. “They took our best shot and came back strong.”

But Fodness was proud of the effort of his players.

“Even when the match was decided our girls who were still on the courts kept battling until the last point was played,” the coach said. “I thought we competed very well.”
