Bemidji falls to St. Cloud 3-1

ST. CLOUD – Bemidji will continue its quest for its first victory today when the Lumberjacks face Sartell at 12:30 p.m. in St. Cloud. Friday in St. Cloud BHS fell 3-1 to the St. Cloud Icebreakers and the loss dropped the Jacks to 0-2-3. The Icebreakers are a merged team among all three of the St. Cloud schools. “We had a so-so first period and trailed 1-0 but we came back and controlled play the rest of the game,” said Bemidji coach Bob Brink. “We kept hammering their goalie but we couldn’t get much past her.” The Lumberjacks fired 31 shots on Icebreaker netminder Lucy Gaetz but managed only one goal. That came in the second period when Karleigh Wolkerstorfer skated into the St. Cloud zone on a 1-on-2 rush, broke to the middle and sent a 30-foot low wrist shot past Gaetz. “Karleigh has power on her slap shot, her wrist shot and her snap shot,” Brink said. “She has one of the best shots of anyone in the section.” The Icebreakers led 2-0 when Wolkerstorfer scored and they padded their cushion with a power play tally in the third period. Leighton Rockensock tended the Bemidji net and stopped 12 shots.
