Bemidji falls 5-0 to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy
FERGUS FALLS -- Hillcrest Lutheran Academy is a private school in Fergus Falls and the student population traditionally fluctuates in numbers and student interests.
The school's boys soccer program, however, usually is very strong and this season appears to be no exception.
Saturday afternoon the Comets dominated the Lumberjacks and coasted to a 5-0 victory.
"Right now Hillcrest is a better team than we are. We haven't lost 5-0 to anybody in a long time," said BHS coach Rick Toward. "I think Hillcrest probably is the best team in our section and that includes St. Cloud Cathedral."
Bemidji mustered only two shots on the Hillcrest net while the Comets sent 17 on the BHS goal. Jacks keeper Matthew Bitter stopped 12 of them but a pair of successful penalty kicks in the first half sent Hillcrest on its way to the win.
"We knew going in that there would be a ton of talent coming at us and Hillcrest ws as strong as I thought it would be," Toward said. "This was a very stern test this early in the season, especially when you consider how young we are."
The Comets opened the scoring four minutes into the action when they converted a penalty kick. By the end of the first half the home team enjoyed a 4-0 advantage and Hillcrest iced the win with its fifth goal seven minutes into the second stanza.
"This game showed that we have some things we need to figure out but we're only two games into the season so we have plenty of time," Toward said. "We meet Hillcrest again in the last game of the year so we will see how much we've improved."
Bemidji (0-2) resumes its schedule Tuesday at Detroit Lakes.
