Bemidji drops final starts at Gopher Classic
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Bemidji Legion baseball team dropped its final two starts at the Gopher Classic Sunday, losing 7-1 to Woodbury and 8-5 in eight innings to Grand Forks.
Bemidji (6-15) will end its regular season Thursday with a doubleheader at Perham. The eight-team, double-elimination sub-state tournament begins July 24 at Moorhead.
The Legion struggled at the plate Sunday as it managed only six hits against Moorhead and five against Grand Forks.
Woodbury forged a 5-0 lead before Bemidji scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Nick Hovila singled and Lucas Goins doubled him home.
Goins paced the offense with a single and a double.
Another slow start cost the Legion in the loss to Grand Forks. Bemidji spotted Grand Forks a 5-0 cushion before it mounted a comeback.
With one out in the lower fourth Thomas Revering reached on a third-strike passed ball and singles by Goins and Collin Rutledge loaded the bases. Dan Johnson was hit by a pitch to force in Revering and Goins scored when Tony Geerdes walked.
Bemidji tied the game with three runs in the fifth. The stanza began with walks to Hovila and Erik Fitzgerald and Goins followed with an RBI single. Rutledge capped the rally with a double that plated Fitzgerald and Goins.
Grand Forks scored three runs in the eighth to cement the win. A two-out error by the Bemidji infield opened the gates for a pair of run-scoring singles.
