Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

The Bemidji High girls basketball team drew the top seed and an opening night bye for its debut into the 7-3A tournament this week.

Play opens tonight with fourth seeded Grand Rapids hosting fifth rated Denfeld, second ranked Hibbing at home with seventh rated Duluth Central and third seeded Hermantown taking on sixth ranked Cloquet.

The semifinals have been shifted from Thursday to Friday night, also at the high seeds with Bemidji hosting Grand Rapids or Denfeld while Hibbing will host Hermantown should the seedings hold up.

The final is March 11 at the Hibbing Memorial Building. All games will begin at 7.

Bemidji will carry a 23-1 record into play.

Two of their wins came over Grand Rapids 72-42 at the Rapids and 74-53 at home.

The Rapids beat Denfeld 64-53 in their only meeting this year. Hibbing beat Central 57-21 while Hermantown swept Cloquet 62-46 and 60-58.

Bemidji is seeking its first trip to the state since it went in 2001 under Bob Luoma, going 1-2 to close the year at 18-9.

Bemidji is one game short of its best record in history going 24-1 in 1995 in a year that that ended at the section final.
