Bemidji designated Reading Corps site

Adults from the community may have an opportunity to assist area students improve their reading skills now that Bemidji School District has been designated as a Minnesota Reading Corps site for next year.

The Minnesota Reading Corps, a statewide initiative that helps children become successful readers, matches trained AmeriCorps members and community volunteers with children who are at risk for not reading at their grade level.

As part of the program, the following positions will be added to the school district for next year:

E Two fulltime literacy tutors each at Northern and J.W. Smith elementary schools.

E One full-time literacy tutor each at Central, Horace May, Lincoln and Paul Bunyan elementary schools.

E One part-time literacy tutor at Solway Elementary.

Reading tutors are expected to be hired by the end of June, with their start date set for Aug. 1.

"We're really excited about this," Kathy Palm, the district's director of curriculum, told the district's Board of Education members Monday. "These tutors will be trained to help students. Their goal is to have all students be proficient in reading by the time they are in third grade. We're hoping this will really help us out."
