Bemidji curling rinks in the hunt at nationals

The Bemidji rinks are doing well at the U.S. National curling tournaments in Aston, Pa.

In the women's division the Cassie Potter and Allison Pottinger rinks are 4-1 and tied for first place after Monday's action, while Pete Fenson is 4-1 and Eric Fenson 2-2 in the men's division.

Joining Cassie Potter on her team is Jamie Haskell and both women are from Bemidji. Completing the rink are Jackie Lemke and Steph Sambor.

Natalie Nicholson, who is from Bemidji, is a member of the Pottinger rink.

The two squads went head-to-head in Monday's morning round and Potter used the hammer to earn a point in the 11th end and post a 7-6 win. Pottinger forced the extra end with two in the ninth and a steal of one in the 10th.

Both won again in Monday's late draw. Potter defeated Kimberly Wapola of St. Paul 8-5 and Pottinger bested Patti Link of New York 5-3.

In the men's division Pete Fenson, Craig Brown of Wisconsin and Heath McCormick of New York are 5-0, one game ahead of Pete Fenson.

McCormick edged Pete Fenson 7-6 in the late draw Monday. Brown defeated Eric Fenson 11-5.

In Monday's morning round Eric Fenson opened a 5-2 lead after eight ends and hung on for a 5-4 win over Blake Morton of Wisconsin. Morton closed within 5-3 with one in the ninth and stole one in the 10th end to make things interesting.

Pete Fenson also had an exciting match. Trailing 5-4 heading into the ninth end Pete Fenson tied the game with one counter. In the decisive 10th end Pete Fenson was able to steal three for the victory.

In Tuesday's morning round Eric Fenson will take on Tyler George of Duluth and Pete Fenson will battle Todd Birr of Mankato. The afternoon session finds Eric Fenson facing Mike Fargbelow of Minneapolis and Pete Fenson matching shots with Brown.

Pottinger faces Janice Langanke of New Jersey Tuesday morning while Potter meets Lank. In Tuesday's late round Pottinger will face Wapola while Potter will meet Brown.
