Bemidji Cross Country Invite: Jacks take second place
The Detroit Lakes Lakers made history at the 40th annual Bemidji Cross Country Invitational Tuesday.
The Lakers swept both boys and girls titles for the first time in their many years of competing.
Host Bemidji finished second in the four-team event run under cold, rainy conditions at Greenwood Golf Course.
Moorhead did not compete this year but will return in 2010. The Spuds had taken the past eight boys titles and last four girls.
Bemidji's highlight of the day was the win by seventh grader Jenna Truedson in the girls varsity race. She led from start to finish to win by 26 seconds over her older sister, sophomore Kim, and Bailey Drewes who finished 2-4.
She was clocked in 15:50.10.
But DL went 3-6-8-9-11 to edge Bemidji 37-38.
Bemidji's last two counters were 15-16.
They were Alex Lyren and Hana Felix. The kickers were LeAnne Oakes 19 and Betsy Richards 19 who were trailed by Liz Vick 21 and Amber Solheim 27.
Trek North had Madeline Hawkins 20. Hannah Lash 22, Rachel Lash 25, Sara Schomberg 28 and Amber Armstrong 29 with Kalina Roy 30.
Crosby-Ironton took third place with 53 points while Trek North had 116.
The Lakers had a larger margin in the boys race, winning with 25 points to 33 for Bemidji with Crosby third at 83.
Leif Johnson of DL won in 17:09.7 with Andy Berube of Bemidji 18 seconds back in second. Dylan Ramstad of DL and Alex Schoneberger and Jake Urban of Bemidji completed the top five.
But the Lakers went 6-7-8 to nail down the title.
Bemidji was 2-4-5-9-13.
Justin Byers was ninth and Dan Clemenson 13.
The kickers were Devin Danielson 15 and Dylan Jones 16 with Tanner Asper 17, Nick Hovila 21, Devin Barrett 22, Zach Rickers 24, Keegan Hilmer 30, Nate Spangler 31, and Hayden Byers 33.
Bemidji ran without John Buckanaga who was ill.
For Trek North, Devian Liesener was 32, Ivan Smith 34 and Mitchell Johnson 37.
Crosby finished third with 81 points. Trek North and Indus ran incomplete.
Bemidji won the two-team boys JV race 21-40 over Detroit Lakes.
Ryan Erickson won in 19:15.71 over Pat Bakken of DL, winning by less than a second.
Jake Fisher and Tony Sagedahl were 3-4 with Scott Hulsebus and Trent Buckanaga 6-7 to complete the scoring.
They were trailed by Kyle Sagedahl, Erik Sorenson, Tom Revering, Pete Humeniuk and Corey Huber from 8-12 with Josh Kane 18, Nate Spangler and Matt Glen 23-24 and Dan Kilday 38.
DL had the lone full team in the girls JV race to win with 15 points. Veronica Haverkamp was the individual winner in 17:51.50.
Kaitlin Bakker of Trek North was fourth with Kristina Lengerhus seventh and Miranda Ritchie 13 for Bemidji.
Junior High races
Bemidji won both junior high races as the only team entered. Indus ran one boy who finished 11.
Sam Carlson won the boys title in 12:40.05 with Evan White, Seth Neubeck, Kyle Pankow and Ben Groshens the next four home to complete the scoring.
Then came Joe Lukowski, Jarrid Conkle, Kyle Krause, Morgan Moe and Evan Copiskey from 6-10 with Kyle Labernik 12.
California Thorson was the girls winner in 14:43.32 with Sarah Reed, Atomic Thorson, Haili Johnson and Lexie Stenson the next four in a five runner field.
Next up for the harriers will be the Section 8AA meet at Little Falls Oct. 29.
