Bemidji City Council: Township seeks committee for Northern Park
Bemidji Minnesota P.O. Box 455 56619

Northern Township has asked the Bemidji City Council to form a committee to consider the future of Northern Township Park.

The City Council is expected to consider the request during its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall.

The 7-acre Northern Township Park, located on Algoma Street Northwest, is within the ring of properties eligible for annexation next year.

According to the Orderly Annexation Agreement, the city will assume maintenance and responsibility of the park, but ownership is not specified.

Discussion in recent months has focused on whether Northern Township should be compensated for the park. But city officials have said they do not have the money to do so.

While Northern Township Park is the only park in the first ring of annexable properties, there is one other park that will be impacted by annexation in future years. Putters Park in Bemidji Township is located in Olympic Hills and will become eligible for annexation in 2020.

BEDA land sale

The Bemidji Economic Development Authority Monday evening will consider selling three lots in the south shore redevelopment to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The BEDA, composed of Bemidji city councilors, will meet Monday following the regular City Council meeting at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The BEDA already accepted an offer from the DNR to buy the lots for $2.3 million.

Two of the lots would be used to construct and connect the Paul Bunyan Trail. The other lot would be preserved as an aquatic management area.

The DNR and BEDA have negotiated a Joint Powers Agreement that would govern the relationship between the entities and manage the use of the property.
