Among notable action taken at the Bemidji City Council meeting Monday:

Vietnam traveling wall

The City Council considered a request to allow the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall at the waterfront while it is in Bemidji from April 2-7.


ACTION: The council voted unanimously to approve.

Nymore Street improvements

The City Council considered adopting the assessment toll for the improvements to Nymore Street totaling $119,873.50.

ACTION: The council voted unanimously to approve.

CSL study

The City Council considered a proposal from Conventions, Sports & Leisure to perform a second feasibility study on the proposed events center at a cost of $30,000. Additionally, the council considered hiring CSL to assist in lease negotiations with Bemidji State University at a cost of $15,000.

ACTION: The council voted unanimously to approve the additional study. The council also voted unanimously to approve hiring CSL for lease negotiations, if its price is comparable to firms which provide similar services.

SAC/WAC policy

The City Council considered a policy regarding sewer and water access connection fees. The policy allows any existing structure that has city water and/or sewer available to it to connect to the city's system(s) before Jan. 1, 2010, without having to pay a SAC/WAC fee. Effective Jan. 1, 2008, all new construction, residential or commercial, would pay a SAC/WAC fee when a building or digging permit is issued.

ACTION: The council voted 6-1 to approve. Councilor Nancy Erickson, who voted against the policy, did not agree that existing structures that do not now have access to sewer and water should have to pay the SAC/WAC fee.

Property acquisition

The City Council approved a purchase agreement for property along the southeast shore of Lake Bemidji that was owned by Joe and Vicki Waslaski. The agreed-upon price for the property is $125,000 and closing was set for Dec. 15.

ACTION: The council voted unanimously to approve.

2008 fee schedule

The City Council held a second reading and public hearing of the amended fee schedule for 2008.

ACTION: No action required. Two people spoke against the proposed SAC/WAC fees.

Building Code amendment

The City Council held the first reading of an ordinance that amends part of the city's building code, which includes adopting for the 2006 International Building Code (was 2000), adoption of the 2006 International Residential Code (was 2000), and adoption of the 2005 National Electrical Code (was 2000).

ACTION: No action required.

Parks and Trails Commission

The City Council held the first reading of an ordinance that limits membership of the Parks and Trails Commission to city residents.

ACTION: No action required.
