Bemidji boys basketball: Shorthanded Jacks fall to Duluth East

Email News Alerts

Duluth East used the outside shooting of wing Johnny Woodard and the inside presence of 7-0 post player Akolda Manyang to overpower the shorthanded Bemidji boys basketball team 99-69 Thursday in Duluth.

Manyang dominated the paint and finished with 30 points while Woodard drained 10 field goals, including a trio from 3-point land, on way to 29 points.

The Lumberjacks were without the services of point guard Mitch Brown who sustained a concussion and cuts in a car accident Wednesday. Brown will also miss Saturday's 3 p.m. home game against Alexandria but the hope is that he will be back on the court Tuesday when the Jacks entertain Detroit Lakes.

BHS stayed with the Greyhounds early and trailed only 37-31 at the break.

"But we ran out of gas in the second half," Bemidji coach Jeff Brown said. "Duluth East is a top-five team in Class 4A and we had no way to stop Manyang or Woodard."

Davaughn Rainey scored 14 points to lead Bemidji's offense. Cody Rutledge and Connor Sullivan each tallied 12 while Zach Declusin had 10 and Brandon Supalla and JC Cervenka contributed nine.

The Jacks will take an 11-8 record into Saturday's game. Duluth East improved to 11-8.
