Bemidji to battle Monticello in 8-3A volleyball semifinals
The Section 8-3A semifinals are set and Tuesday's match-ups will pit a pair of No. 3 seeds against two top-ranked teams.
Friday night Bemidji, the third seed from the North Sub-Section, outgunned No. 2 Moorhead 26-24, 23-25, 18-25, 25-10, 15-8 in Moorhead.
Monticello, the No. 1 seed from the South, had an easier time advancing as it blitzed Sartell 27-25, 25-17, 25-20.
The Lumberjacks will head to Monticello 7 p.m. Tuesday in one semifinal and that winner will advance to the Section 8-3A championship match Nov. 4 at a neutral site.
Tuesday's other semifinal sees Sauk Rapids, the third seed from the South, traveling to Fergus Falls, the No. 1 seed from the North.
In Friday's play Sauk Rapids upset St. Cloud Tech, the second seed from the South, 25-17, 25-27, 18-25, 25-19, 15-11.
Fergus Falls eliminated Brainerd 25-16, 24-26, 25-22, 25-22 in Friday's other upper-bracket contest.
Fan bus to Monticello
Bemidji fans wishing to follow the Lumberjacks are invited to take advantage of a fan bus which will leave from the high school 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.
The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for students and fans are asked to sign up by contacting the BHS activities office at 444-1600, extension 3316.

Section 8A volleyball
Section 8A also continued its playdowns Friday. In the East Sub-Section top-seeded Lake of the Woods ousted No. 8 Kelliher-Northome 25-8, 25-10, 25-10 while No. 5 Clearbrook-Gonvick disposed of No. 4 Cass Lake-Bena in four games.
In the lower bracket third-seeded Walker-Hackensack-Akeley downed No. 6 Mahnomen 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 and No. 2 Fosston blitzed seventh-seeded Laporte 25-13, 25-15, 25-12.
The East Sub-Section scene shifts to Bemidji State University on Tuesday as LOW will face Clearbrook-Gonvick at 6 p.m. and WHA will tangle with Fosston at 7:30 p.m.
The Section 8A semifinals will also be played at BSU on Nov. 4 while the championship will be hosted by UM-Crookston the next night.
