Bemidji baseball team falls in season finale
The regular season ended on a negative note for the Bemidji baseball team as Moorhead handed the Jacks a 10-2 setback Thursday at the Bemidji State University diamond.
BHS will take a 12-8 record into postseason play which begins Monday while Moorhead improved to 16-4. The section seedings and schedule will be determined today.
The top four seeded teams will host Monday's action with play-in games set for noon and those winners meeting the higher seeds at 3 p.m.
The scene will shift to St. Cloud on Saturday for the start of the double-elimination portion involving Monday's four survivors.
Bemidji and Moorhead were knotted at 1-1 Thursday until the fourth inning when the visitors scored three runs to take command. Moorhead added another tally in the fifth and settled the issue with four in the seventh.
The Lumberjacks took a 1-0 lead in the second. Matt Hietala and Mason Bellew both walked and advanced on a wild pitch. Paul Voss followed with a sacrifice fly to right which plated Hietala.
Moorhead drew even in the third on a pair of singles and a pair of sacrifices and took the lead for good in the fourth as three doubles and a single produced three runs.
The Jacks sliced their deficit to 4-2 in the lower half of the fourth as Hietala singled, Bellew walked, Voss laid down a sacrifice bunt and Josh Kane score Hietala with a grounder to second.
But the Jacks would not score again as a trio of Moorhead hurlers retired 12 of Bemidji's final 13 batters.
Zach Solheim took the mound loss. Kane pitiched 2.1 innings and Matt Schneider worked 1.2 innings.
Bemidji's offense managed only three hits, a pair of singles by Hietala and Jeremiah Graves' single in the third.
