Bemidji baseball team erupts for 14 runs in first inning, beats Prowlers 16-0.
Another outstanding performance by the pitching staff and an offense that couldn't be stopped in the first inning combined to give the Bemidji baseball team a resounding 16-0 victory Monday at Thief River Falls.
The Lumberjacks pounded nine hits and scored 14 runs in the top of the first to make things easy for starting pitcher Ryan Stevens, who worked the first two innings. Matt Schneider relieved in the third and Kris Berndt pitched the fifth.
The three hurlers allowed only one hit, a single in the fifth inning, and combined for nine strikeouts and one walk.
In 12 innings over two games, the BHS pitchers have allowed only two singles.
"The pitching staff has been a strong suit for us so far and hopefully it will continue," said Lumberjacks coach Mike Fogelson.
Monday at Thief River Falls, the offense set the table for the pitchers by pounding 13 hits, nine of them in the opening frame.
Those early hits, combined with a few walks and Prowler errors, produced 14 first-inning runs.
"We came out and hit the ball early and often," Fogelson said. "It was nice to see our bats come through and nice to see how we took advantage of their mistakes."
Collin Leif's double gave the Jacks a 1-0 lead and Cody Rutledge followed with an RBI single. Mason Bellew delivered the killing blow, however, when he ripped a 3-run round-tripper over the left-field fence.
The bats continued to produce in the inning as six more hits accounted for nine more runs.
Bemidji closed the scoring with two runs in the fifth as Chase Vogt contributed an RBI single and Brandon Larson an RBI double.
Bellew finished with a home run and a single. Larson smacked two doubles, Leif added a double and a single and Rutledge contributed a pair of singles.
The Lumberjacks, 2-0, return to action 4:30 p.m. today when they host Grand Rapids at the BSU diamond.
"Grand Rapids is always a strong team and will give us a stern test," Fogelson said.
Rutledge is expected to get today's pitching assignment.
