Bemidji baseball: Anderson named Lions All-Star
Bemidji righthander Simon Anderson has been selected to play in the annual Lions All-Star baseball series this spring.
He becomes the 16th Lumberjack to be named to the series but first since Ross Olson in 2006.
The tournament involves four 20-player teams playing a round robin series representing the Minnesota North, Minnesota South, Metro East and Metro West.
Profits from the series go to the Lions Children's Eye Clinic at the University of Minnesota.
The meet will be held June 19-20 at Chaska.
Anderson completed his third varsity season posting a 4-2 mound mark with 29 hits and eight earned runs allowed in 43 innings of work showing 67 strikeouts and only 13 walks while posting a 1.67 earned run average.
When not on the mound, he patrolled center field. At the plate he hit ,262 with 17 hits in 65 at bats with three doubles, one triple and one home run with nine runs batted in. He committed only two errors all season.
The list of Bemidji's previous Lions competitors reads like an all star team.
It began with Pete Maus in 1975 and includes players such as John Noga, Bryan Hickerson, Mark Varriano, John Somrock, Shawn Ross Eddie Johnson, Jason Fairchild Darren Caspers and Cody Randt, most of whom went on to play college ball with Hickerson reaching the major leagues as a professional.
Anderson will play this summer with the Bemidji American Legion. Hew has yet to announce which college he will attend.
His older brother Sam is a pitcher at UND playing summer ball with the Bemidji Mudcats.
