KELLIHER – The Kelliher-Northome girls basketball team and most of its peers resume their schedules today when the Mustangs visit Cass Lake-Bena.


Kelliher-Northome fared well in its pre-holiday action, posting 5-2 record and seeing Katey Heck score her 1,000th point during a 57-48 win over Lake of the Woods in mid-December.

The Mustangs will bring a 5-2 record into today’s game while Cass Lake-Bena is 0-8. Kelliher-Northome is coming off an 80-55 pre-Christmas win over Blackduck, a victory that was sparked by a 20-5 run which led to a 33-18 halftime advantage.

Kelly Heck finished with 27 points, eight assists and four steals. Katey Lutz added 22 points, 11 rebounds and five steals while Shelene Head drained four treys and finished with 16 points, six boards and four blocks.

Carrie Carrigan snared 11 rebounds and contributed seven points.

Today’s game is the first of three road tests for the Mustangs. On Monday they will head to Bigfork and on Jan. 10 K-N will visit Littlefork-Big Falls.

Blackduck is 2-5 entering today’s game at Pine River-Backus. The Drakes also will head to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on Jan. 11.

Cass Lake-Bena travels to Clearbrook-Gonvick Friday, hosts Remer Monday and visits Pine River Tuesday. Over the holidays the Panthers dropped three games at the Walker Invitational, losing 70-34 to Wadena, 44-37 to the host team and 75-46 to Sebeka.

Red Lake went 5-0 in 2012 and will try to extend that streak Jan. 10 when it hosts Red Lake County Central.

Laporte finds itself on the other side of the ledger and the 0-7 Wildcats will shoot for their initial victory today when they host Bug O Nay Ge Shig.

Bagley is 5-3 after battering Climax-Fisher 81-21 prior to Christmas. The Flyers travel to Warroad Saturday and welcome Win-E-Mac on Tuesday.

Clearbrook-Gonvick (8-0) hopes to continue its winning ways this week as the Bears host CL-B today, Mahnomen Monday and WHA Tuesday.

Boys basketball

Most of the area boys basketball teams also return to the courts today. Kelliher-Northome fell 73-64 to Blackduck in its most recent outing but hopes to recover from that setback when it visits Cass Lake-Bena. The Mustangs also travel to Roseau on Tuesday.

CL-B (2-5) had a tough time at the Crosby-Ironton Invitational during the holidays, dropping games to Crosby (69-61), to Moose Lake (8-62) and to Warroad (63-52).

Red Lake (5-5) went 1-2 at the Thief River Falls holiday tournament, downing Kittson County Central 72-64 but losing to Thief River Falls 86-73 and to Northern Freeze 66-52.

The Warriors host Blackduck today, make a trip to Warren Friday and welcome Nevis Tuesday.

Blackduck is 4-3 after stopping Kelliher-Northome. Following today’s game at Red Lake the Drakes will visit Deer River on Tuesday.

Bagley downed Climax-Fisher 64-53 during the break to improve to 3-5. The Flyers hope to extend their winning streak to three games when they host Thief River Falls Thursday. Friday sees Bagley visiting Warroad and on Monday they will entertain Win-E-Mac.

Clearbrook-Gonvick lost to Northern Freeze 81-48 and to Warren 66-47 but edged Sacred Heart 60-58 during the Thief River Falls holiday tournament. The Bears (2-6) head to Goodridge-Grygla today and host Win-E-Mac Thursday. On Tuesday they will entertain WHA.

Leintz reaches 100 points

Senior Aaron Leintz of the Bagley-Fosston hockey team notched his 100th career point on Dec. 29. The point helped the Flyers post a 7-2 victory and even their record at 5-5.

Bagley-Fosston won two of three games during the event, losing 6-3 to North Shore but belting Ely 8-4 prior to the win over Moose Lake.

Leintz had seven goals and seven assists in the three games and enters 2013 sixth in the state in goals scored with 18 and eighth in points with 34.

Bagley-Fosston visits Park Rapids today, hosts Ely on Saturday and is at Lake of the Woods on Tuesday.
